Psalm 25 – Praying the Psalms Project

Some days are a battle and sometimes those days stretch into weeks, months, even years.  The last few weeks have been a battle, we have seen heartbreak and sadness at every turn.   Sometimes just waiting and hanging on is winning.

David was ready to give up many times.  He found fear and turmoil swirling around him, more time than he could count he would find himself hanging on and waiting.  As he began to talk to God, something stirred within him.  That something was Faith.

Believing even when he could not see the outcome.

Hang on my friends, wait and believe – the Lord is near.

Psalm 25

To You, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
O my God, I trust in You;
Let me not be ashamed;
Let not my enemies triumph over me.
Indeed, let no one who waits on You be ashamed;
Let those be ashamed who deal treacherously without cause.

Show me Your ways, O Lord;
Teach me Your paths.
Lead me in Your truth and teach me,
For You are the God of my salvation;
On You I wait all the day.

Remember, O Lord, Your tender mercies and Your lovingkindnesses,
For they are from of old.
Do not remember the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions;
According to Your mercy remember me,
For Your goodness’ sake, O Lord.

Good and upright is the Lord;
Therefore He teaches sinners in the way.
The humble He guides in justice,
And the humble He teaches His way.
10 All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth,
To such as keep His covenant and His testimonies.
11 For Your name’s sake, O Lord,
Pardon my iniquity, for it is great.

12 Who is the man that fears the Lord?
Him shall He teach in the way He chooses.
13 He himself shall dwell in prosperity,
And his descendants shall inherit the earth.
14 The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him,
And He will show them His covenant.
15 My eyes are ever toward the Lord,
For He shall pluck my feet out of the net.

16 Turn Yourself to me, and have mercy on me,
For I am desolate and afflicted.
17 The troubles of my heart have enlarged;
Bring me out of my distresses!
18 Look on my affliction and my pain,
And forgive all my sins.
19 Consider my enemies, for they are many;
And they hate me with cruel hatred.
20 Keep my soul, and deliver me;
Let me not be ashamed, for I put my trust in You.
21 Let integrity and uprightness preserve me,
For I wait for You.

22 Redeem Israel, O God,
Out of all their troubles!

For You are the God of my salvation;On You I wait all the day. Psalm 25-5

Lift up my soul, Lord.

I trust in You!

Don’t let the enemy win any longer.

I am not ashamed as I wait on You.

Show me Your ways, teach me Your paths.

Lead me in Your truth.

You are the God of my salvation.

I will wait all day for You, Lord.

Thank you that You forget the sin of my youth.

By your mercy You remember me.

You are good and upright

You teach sinners, like me, the the way.

You teach me with Your mercy and loving kindness.

You show me the way to humility and justice.

The paths that lead to You are paved with mercy and truth –

When I reverence You and follow Your teaching

You lead me in prosperity and show me Your Word.

I fix my eyes on You.

When you turn Your eyes upon me,

You will lift me out of my distress, affliction and pain.

You forgive all my sins!

Deliver me Lord –

I am not ashamed to put my trust in You.

Let your integrity and uprightness preserve me –

while I wait for You.  – Amen

Psalm 24 – Praying the Psalms Project

I climbed a mountain once.  I did not cling to rocks, it was more like a steep trail.  At first it was easy, but as the trail became steep it was not so easy.  Less talking and giggling with my girlfriends and more huffing and puffing.  About half way up the mountain this non-physical gal was ready to quit and go read a good book.

We pressed on and made it the top, where I realized I was utterly and completely afraid of heights.  Not a fun time!

Our lives are a lot like a mountain climb.  Some parts of the climb are easy, others terrifying and difficult.

Here is what Psalm 24 tells us – Those with clean hands and pure hearts have access to the top of the Lord’s mountain anytime, anywhere.  They can climb up and stand on His holy hill where He breaths into us, life and courage, for this mountain climb called life.

What if you are like me and you do not have clean hands and a pure heart on your own?

I have good news – Because of Jesus I can climb the mountain of the Lord and stand in His holy place and so can you.

Psalm 24

Of David. A psalm.

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,
    the world, and all who live in it;
for he founded it on the seas
    and established it on the waters.

Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord?
    Who may stand in his holy place?
The one who has clean hands and a pure heart,
    who does not trust in an idol
    or swear by a false god.

They will receive blessing from the Lord
    and vindication from God their Savior.
Such is the generation of those who seek him,
    who seek your face, God of Jacob.

Lift up your heads, you gates;
    be lifted up, you ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
    The Lord strong and mighty,
    the Lord mighty in battle.
Lift up your heads, you gates;
    lift them up, you ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.
10 Who is he, this King of glory?
    The Lord Almighty—
    he is the King of glory.

I can climbthe mountain of the Lord_ Who may stand in his holy place_

Oh Lord, You have made everything and everyone in Creation, even me.

You have founded and established all things.

My life is a mountain climb,

When I reach the top, I will sit with you in Your holy place

Through Jesus – I have clean hands and a pure heart.

I trust only You, Lord.

You have given me blessing and vindication.

I seek Your face.

I open the gates and lift the doors of my life wide.

Come in Lord Almighty, King of Glory!  – Amen

Psalm 23 – Praying the Psalms Project

The timeless, so often quoted Twenty-Third Psalm.  If you have been to a funeral – you’ve heard it.  Many believers and unbelievers have and will cling to the words of this Psalm in dark and desperate times.

Our God is a God who honors His Word. In the dark valleys of life – He is with us.

Always Seeing ~ Always Knowing

Always Leaning ~ Always Calling

When our cups are bone dry – He causes them to overflow

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
    He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
    he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
    for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk
    through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
    for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
Surely your goodness and love will follow me
    all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord

Lord, You are my Shepherd.  In You I lack nothing.

When my soul is in turmoil You take me to quiet places.

Alongside green pastures and still waters.

There my soul is refreshed.

You are my guide in my path through this life.

When that path takes me through dark valleys, You are with me.

You comfort me and tend to me.

You place Your anointing oil upon my life and my cup overflows.

Every day of my life Your goodness and love goes with me.

I trust in that.

I make my home with You and I will dwell there forever. – Amen

Psalm 22 – Praying the Psalms Project

The first line of this Psalm are questions I have asked many times.

“Where are you Lord?  Do you not see what is going on?

The problems of life come, God’s Word tells us not to be surprised.  We are called to consider them pure joy.  Easier said than done.  Who wants to rejoice through difficulties, heartbreak and stress?   Why are they necessary?  Why rejoice in them?

 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4

When life is moving along bump free, we tend to glide along.

When trials come that we draw near to God. In that place of waiting we grow in faith and patience.  He is maturing us in our faith.  Not fun – but necessary.

When I find myself in that place my prayer is this – Help me to learn fast,God!

Psalm 22

For the director of music. To the tune of “The Doe of the Morning.” A psalm of David.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
    Why are you so far from saving me,
    so far from my cries of anguish?
My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,
    by night, but I find no rest.

Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;
    you are the one Israel praises.
In you our ancestors put their trust;
    they trusted and you delivered them.
To you they cried out and were saved;
    in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

But I am a worm and not a man,
    scorned by everyone, despised by the people.
All who see me mock me;
    they hurl insults, shaking their heads.
“He trusts in the Lord,” they say,
    “let the Lord rescue him.
Let him deliver him,
    since he delights in him.”

Yet you brought me out of the womb;
    you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast.
10 From birth I was cast on you;
    from my mother’s womb you have been my God.

11 Do not be far from me,
    for trouble is near
    and there is no one to help.

12 Many bulls surround me;
    strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.
13 Roaring lions that tear their prey
    open their mouths wide against me.
14 I am poured out like water,
    and all my bones are out of joint.
My heart has turned to wax;
    it has melted within me.
15 My mouth is dried up like a potsherd,
    and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;
    you lay me in the dust of death.

16 Dogs surround me,
    a pack of villains encircles me;
    they pierce my hands and my feet.
17 All my bones are on display;
    people stare and gloat over me.
18 They divide my clothes among them
    and cast lots for my garment.

19 But you, Lord, do not be far from me.
    You are my strength; come quickly to help me.
20 Deliver me from the sword,
    my precious life from the power of the dogs.
21 Rescue me from the mouth of the lions;
    save me from the horns of the wild oxen.

22 I will declare your name to my people;
    in the assembly I will praise you.
23 You who fear the Lord, praise him!
    All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!
    Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
24 For he has not despised or scorned
    the suffering of the afflicted one;
he has not hidden his face from him
    but has listened to his cry for help.

25 From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly;
    before those who fear you I will fulfill my vows.
26 The poor will eat and be satisfied;
    those who seek the Lord will praise him—
    may your hearts live forever!

27 All the ends of the earth
    will remember and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
    will bow down before him,
28 for dominion belongs to the Lord
    and he rules over the nations.

29 All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;
    all who go down to the dust will kneel before him—
    those who cannot keep themselves alive.
30 Posterity will serve him;
    future generations will be told about the Lord.
31 They will proclaim his righteousness,
    declaring to a people yet unborn:
    He has done it!

It's when trials come that we draw near to Him. It's where we grow and mature in faith and in patience, as we wait to see how God will work.

Lord, have you left me?  You seem so far away.  Do you see me, hear me?

I cry out to you but I can’t hear you.

I try to sleep, but I have no rest.

I know you are Holy and that many believers before me have put their trust in You.

I see you delivering them.

What about me, Lord?

Sometimes I feel invisible, like a worm crawling on the ground that no one sees.

People come against me with the words they say and I’m discouraged.

Yet You made me, formed me in my mother’s womb.  You were there with me.

Stay close to me, Lord.

I know you are there when trouble surrounds me, when my heart melts and I feel like water poured out.

I am reminded how Jesus must have felt as His hands and feet were pierced,

As He hung on the Cross displayed for all to see, as they cast lots for His clothing.

All for me you sent your Son.

Through Him you give me strength, You deliver me and rescue me.

For this I give You praise and honor!

For you have not despised me, Lord, or hidden your face from me.

You listen to me and I am satisfied.  My heart will live forever!

Lord I will always turn to You.  I will sing your praise to generations.

That they will know all You have done. – Amen

Psalm 21 – Praying the Psalms Project

We all have times in our life when we are overwhelmed and feel plain old weak.  We feel like we are not winning at life and there is defeat at every door.  It seems as if this world in which we live is full of evil and we just cannot see the good.

David reminds us in this Psalm that –

We are not strong.  He is.

We are not victorious.  He Is

We are not joyful.  He is.

The great news-  He is and He Lives in us, He hears us and He knows our heart.

He is our strength, our joy, He equips us and causes us to become victorious!

Psalm 21

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

The king rejoices in your strength, Lord.
    How great is his joy in the victories you give!

You have granted him his heart’s desire
    and have not withheld the request of his lips.
You came to greet him with rich blessings
    and placed a crown of pure gold on his head.
He asked you for life, and you gave it to him—
    length of days, for ever and ever.
Through the victories you gave, his glory is great;
    you have bestowed on him splendor and majesty.
Surely you have granted him unending blessings
    and made him glad with the joy of your presence.
For the king trusts in the Lord;
    through the unfailing love of the Most High
    he will not be shaken.

Your hand will lay hold on all your enemies;
    your right hand will seize your foes.
When you appear for battle,
    you will burn them up as in a blazing furnace.
The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath,
    and his fire will consume them.
10 You will destroy their descendants from the earth,
    their posterity from mankind.
11 Though they plot evil against you
    and devise wicked schemes, they cannot succeed.
12 You will make them turn their backs
    when you aim at them with drawn bow.

13 Be exalted in your strength, Lord;
    we will sing and praise your might.

I rejoice in Your strength Lord.

When You give me victories, I am filled with joy.

You grant me my heart’s desires – you listen to my requests.

You have given me many blessings – I feel like queen.

You gave me my life, each and every day.

In my victories, you are glorified, Lord.

I am blessed to be part of your Royal Family.

Your blessings are unending.  In Your presence I am glad.

I trust in You and Your unfailing love.

Inside Your love I cannot be shaken.

Your Hand grasps Your enemies, Lord.

When You show up for battle – you are like a blazing furnace.

You swallow Your enemies with fire.

I am so angry at the evil in the world, Lord.

They plot and plan wicked schemes.

You see them.

You cause them to turn their backs and You draw Your bow.

Lord, I exalt You!  You are mighty in strength.

I will sing Your praise!   – Amen

Psalm 20 – Praying the Psalms Project

This Psalm comes from a very different voice.  It is almost as if David is praying for us, the readers.  Several commentaries state that David is praying for himself and the coming Kings of Israel.

I feel that includes us, since we are joint heirs with Christ and He is the King of Kings.

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.  Romans 8: 16-18

Psalm 20

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

May the Lord answer you when you are in distress;
    may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.
May he send you help from the sanctuary
    and grant you support from Zion.
May he remember all your sacrifices
    and accept your burnt offerings.
May he give you the desire of your heart
    and make all your plans succeed.
May we shout for joy over your victory
    and lift up our banners in the name of our God.

May the Lord grant all your requests.

Now this I know:
    The Lord gives victory to his anointed.
He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary
    with the victorious power of his right hand.
Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
    but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
They are brought to their knees and fall,
    but we rise up and stand firm.
Lord, give victory to the king!
    Answer us when we call!

David’s Prayer over you –

 May the Lord answer you when you are in distress;
    may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.

– Amen

Your Prayer –

 Lord – I know this…

You give victory to your anointed.

You hear and answer me from your heavenly sanctuary

In Your right hand is victorious power

Some trust in the things of this world.

I choose to place my trust in You

Those who trust in the things of this world will fall.

I will rise up and stand firm.

Lord I ask for victories in my life.

You are the King who hears me when I call – Amen

Psalm 19 – Praying the Psalms Project

Here in Western Pennsylvania, we have a nick name for our region, ‘The Land of the Clouds’.  More days than not we have grey clouds.  When a bright sunny day comes along, our windows open wide and we enjoy every minute.

Creation reveals the glory of God.  In Psalm 19 we are reminded that even in silence all of creation is proclaiming the work of God’s hands.  We are part of that work.

Let’s not allow ourselves to become so busy that we forget to stop and glory in it.

To open our eyes and see God’s creation all around us.

To open our ears and our lives to His precepts.

Psalm 19

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

The heavens declare the glory of God;
    the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
    night after night they reveal knowledge.
They have no speech, they use no words;
    no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
    their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
    It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
    like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
It rises at one end of the heavens
    and makes its circuit to the other;
    nothing is deprived of its warmth.

The law of the Lord is perfect,
    refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,
    making wise the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right,
    giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant,
    giving light to the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is pure,
    enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm,
    and all of them are righteous.

10 They are more precious than gold,
    than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,
    than honey from the honeycomb.
11 By them your servant is warned;
    in keeping them there is great reward.
12 But who can discern their own errors?
    Forgive my hidden faults.
13 Keep your servant also from willful sins;
    may they not rule over me.
Then I will be blameless,
    innocent of great transgression.

14 May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart
    be pleasing in your sight,
    Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer

Lord, Your Creation declares Your Glory.

The bright blue sky in the day and the dark, star-filled skies of the night – are silent.

Yet they are noticed by us all.  Like You, there is no place that they do not reach.

They circle the world, Your world – our world.

You have hung the Sun in the sky,

like a bridegroom watching his bride,spin before him.

Lord, I know Your law is perfect- its purpose is to refresh my soul.

I can trust your statutes, they give me wisdom.

Your precepts are right, in this world full of wrongs and they bring joy to my soul.

Your commands are radiant, they give light to my eyes and help me to see clearly.

To fear You, to reverence You is the purest thing I can do.

Your decrees stand firm, each one righteous.

They are precious, more precious than pure gold and sweeter than honey.

Your decrees warn me, help me to discern and keep me from willful sin.

You forgive me, even the faults that I try so hard to hide.

Through Jesus, I  am made blameless.

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart

be pleasing in your sight,

Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer – Amen

Psalm 18 – Praying the Psalms Project

A victory song from David.  Finally, the Lord has delivered him from his enemies, including King Saul.

I must say, through out the first seventeen Psalms I felt like David was whining.  It seemed as if he was consumed by his enemies. Maybe he was just persistent in presenting his requests to God, because he knew who his Deliverer was.

How often am I consumed by a problem or battle I am facing. I can’t stop thinking about it, talking about it or crying out the the Lord about it. I’ll be honest, it could sound like – dare I say it – whining.  Maybe, just maybe, I am persistent just like David, because I too, know who my Deliverer is.

He delivered a  man on the run, who was anointed to become King of Israel.  Won’t He also deliver a  woman who is seeking His perfect will for her life.

Yes He will – He is our Deliverer

Psalm 18

For the director of music. Of David the servant of the Lord. He sang to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said:

I love you, Lord, my strength.

The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
    my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
    my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
    and I have been saved from my enemies.
The cords of death entangled me;
    the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.
The cords of the grave coiled around me;
    the snares of death confronted me.

In my distress I called to the Lord;
    I cried to my God for help.
From his temple he heard my voice;
    my cry came before him, into his ears.
The earth trembled and quaked,
    and the foundations of the mountains shook;
    they trembled because he was angry.
Smoke rose from his nostrils;
    consuming fire came from his mouth,
    burning coals blazed out of it.
He parted the heavens and came down;
    dark clouds were under his feet.
10 He mounted the cherubim and flew;
    he soared on the wings of the wind.
11 He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him—
    the dark rain clouds of the sky.
12 Out of the brightness of his presence clouds advanced,
    with hailstones and bolts of lightning.
13 The Lord thundered from heaven;
    the voice of the Most High resounded.
14 He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy,
    with great bolts of lightning he routed them.
15 The valleys of the sea were exposed
    and the foundations of the earth laid bare
at your rebuke, Lord,
    at the blast of breath from your nostrils.

16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me;
    he drew me out of deep waters.
17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy,
    from my foes, who were too strong for me.
18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster,
    but the Lord was my support.
19 He brought me out into a spacious place;
    he rescued me because he delighted in me.

20 The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness;
    according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.
21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord;
    I am not guilty of turning from my God.
22 All his laws are before me;
    I have not turned away from his decrees.
23 I have been blameless before him
    and have kept myself from sin.
24 The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
    according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

25 To the faithful you show yourself faithful,
    to the blameless you show yourself blameless,
26 to the pure you show yourself pure,
    but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.
27 You save the humble
    but bring low those whose eyes are haughty.
28 You, Lord, keep my lamp burning;
    my God turns my darkness into light.
29 With your help I can advance against a troop;
    with my God I can scale a wall.

30 As for God, his way is perfect:
    The Lord’s word is flawless;
    he shields all who take refuge in him.
31 For who is God besides the Lord?
    And who is the Rock except our God?
32 It is God who arms me with strength
    and keeps my way secure.
33 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;
    he causes me to stand on the heights.
34 He trains my hands for battle;
    my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
35 You make your saving help my shield,
    and your right hand sustains me;
    your help has made me great.
36 You provide a broad path for my feet,
    so that my ankles do not give way.

37 I pursued my enemies and overtook them;
    I did not turn back till they were destroyed.
38 I crushed them so that they could not rise;
    they fell beneath my feet.
39 You armed me with strength for battle;
    you humbled my adversaries before me.
40 You made my enemies turn their backs in flight,
    and I destroyed my foes.
41 They cried for help, but there was no one to save them—
    to the Lord, but he did not answer.
42 I beat them as fine as windblown dust;
    I trampled them like mud in the streets.
43 You have delivered me from the attacks of the people;
    you have made me the head of nations.
People I did not know now serve me,
44     foreigners cower before me;
    as soon as they hear of me, they obey me.
45 They all lose heart;
    they come trembling from their strongholds.

46 The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock!
    Exalted be God my Savior!
47 He is the God who avenges me,
    who subdues nations under me,
48     who saves me from my enemies.
You exalted me above my foes;
    from a violent man you rescued me.
49 Therefore I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
    I will sing the praises of your name.

50 He gives his king great victories;
    he shows unfailing love to his anointed,
    to David and to his descendants forever.

To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless,26 to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.

I love You, Lord!  You are my Strength, my Rock, my Fortress, my Deliverer

In You I find a safe place from the storms of life.

You are the Shield that covers me, You are the Strength of my Salvation, my Stronghold –

I praise You!

When life tries to entangle me, destruction is all around me and the coils of death try to strangle me – You hear my cries.

You hear and You take action on my behalf.  You are so strong that the foundations of the earth tremble – In Your might and Your power.

You part the heavens and come to my aide.

You reach down and lift me out of deep waters. You rescue me and You are all the support I need.

Sometimes it is hard for me to believe, but You rescue me, because You delight in me.

 You delight in me, when no one else does.

I am able to stand clean before you, Lord – only by the blood of Your Son Jesus.

Help me to stay true to You and Your Word –  That I will never turn away from You.

To the faithful You show Yourself faithful- to the blameless You show Yourself blameless,
 To the pure You show Yourself pure  –  but to the devious You show Yourself shrewd.

Help me to keep my light shining, for You turn my darkness to light.

With You I can move forward, I can scale the obstacles before me.

Your ways are perfect – Your Word flawless

There is not one, like my God – You are my Rock.

You make my way secure, You help me to walk through this life with the grace of a deer.

I can stand on the heights, sure footed!

You make the road before me broad, so I can find my way.

Providing everything I need for my journey –

You help me to pursue and overcome my enemy – I crush him beneath my feet.

He turns his back to me and runs.  The enemy cries out, but there is no one to save him.

I’ll trample him until he is like dust in the wind and mud beneath my feet.

Because You, Lord have armed me with strength.

I give You praise – My Rock and My Savior

You have saved me – I will always sing your praises.

For You Lord, have unfailing love toward me. – Amen
